About this journey

What makes this trip.

China rewards the traveller who takes the long way round, and this fifteen-day program is built for exactly that. It opens amid the neon and glass of Shanghai — the Yu Garden, the Bund, the view from the country's tallest tower — then slows to the tempo of canals and tea gardens in Suzhou and Hangzhou, two cities Marco Polo counted among the most beautiful he had ever seen. From there the route turns north to Beijing, where Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and a cable-car ride up the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall put the full weight of imperial history on display, alongside the centuries-old Islamic heritage of the Niujie Mosque and its surrounding quarter. The journey then breaks free of the cities entirely, crossing into the grasslands of Inner Mongolia for horseback rides across the Xilamuren pastures, a traditional yurt visit, and time with the herders who still live by the rhythm of the steppe. Designed for agencies and operators building a premium China itinerary, the program balances the country's headline monuments with quieter, more textured moments — a silver Buddha in Hohhot, a son-et-lumière evening on the water in Hangzhou, halal dining throughout. High-speed rail and internal transfers stitch the whole route together, so groups spend their time exploring rather than in transit. It is a complete portrait of a nation that holds its ancient past and its restless future in the same frame.
  • Ascend the tallest tower in China for a panoramic view over Shanghai and stroll the Bund along the Huangpu River
  • Glide the canals of Suzhou, the 'Venice of the East', and wander the historic Shantang waterside quarter
  • Cruise the UNESCO-listed West Lake in Hangzhou and taste green tea in the Longjing hills
  • Walk the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, reached by cable car, away from the busiest crowds
  • Explore Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the vast imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties
  • Discover Beijing's Temple of Heaven and the historic Niujie Mosque in the city's Muslim quarter
  • Ride horseback across the Xilamuren grasslands of Inner Mongolia and visit a traditional Mongolian yurt
  • See the giant silver Buddha of the Dazhao Temple in Hohhot
